The Group: general overview

The Consolidated Group «Basque Country, Europe and the Americas. Inter-Atlantic Links and Relationships» (www.paisvascoyamerica.eu) is a young research team whose main aim is to deepen on the knowledge of the historical interactions, contacts and exchanges at every level in the Atlantic space, linking Europe with other territories overseas, mainly -but not only- the Americas, from the 15th century up to the present. Membership of the group reflects an interdisciplinary composition (Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern and Contemporary History, History of Arts and Music, Geography). It is supported by the Basque Autonomous Government and is based on the Micaela Portilla Research Center of the University of the Basque Country, Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The two main thematic lines of the group are structured around the overall topic of the historical development, contacts and mutual influences between Europe and the Atlantic scape. On the one hand, we focus on the analysis of the spaces, forms and institutions of power in Spain and America from a comparative/collaborative point of view. On the other hand, inter-atlantic exchanges are also studied: migratory movements, social links, economic relationships and cultural influences).
Promotion of new researchers is also one of the goals of the group, with the inclusion of researchers on the making (Ph.D candidates) within the ranks and scientific activities of the group. Moreover, due to the specificity of the topic, internationalization of research is another of the main aims of the group, that has established (and is establishing) a web of external collaborator-researchers from universities of Europe and the Americas.
